Great treasures may exist in the memories of war heroes, or in the old photos and records of those we have lost. These stories help explain how the present world that we inhabit exists because of the roles they played in global history. Yet, like old photos, treasures of memory crumble more with each passing year. Wisdom about the relevance of the past to the future is lost, and we are diminished.
